Purpose

PURPOSE

The purpose of Alpha Nu Omega, Inc. is to present a Christian alternative

to the students and/or faculty on college/university campuses, to minister to the needs of the whole person (spirit, soul, and body), and to promote an attitude of academic excellence among its members.

Alpha Nu Omega, Inc. (ANQ) was founded to fill a void in the college and university community. ANQ allows undergraduates and post-graduates interested in Greek life to join an organization that directly encourages their Christian walk. The organization seeks to develop Christian leaders who influence every facet of society.

Foundational Hist FOUNDATIONAL HISTORYIn 1985 God, the Holy Spirit gave Evangelist Shirley K. Russell (a God fearing woman and mathematics instructor at Morgan State University) a vision for a Christian fraternity and sorority. The development of this vision matured when Evangelist Russell shared the vision with two of her students, Doral R. Pulley and Joyce Mungo, who were very instrumental in organizing the "CALLING ALL CHRISTIANS" meeting on November 3, 1988. This is now known as Founder's Day.The Lord moved on the hearts and minds of many of the attendees of the meeting to help in the manifestation of the vision of Alpha Nu Omega. The first fruits of Alpha Nu Omega consisted of 14 founding brothers and 15 founding sisters. Collectively they labored along with the Visionary Founder Shirley K. Russell in establishing the Constitution of Alpha Nu Omega. This step enabled the organization to be incorporated on December 20, 1988, 47 days after the founding date. The National Headquarters was at this time established at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland.Many crucial decisions were made by the Founders of Alpha Nu Omega, Inc. in regard to the administration of the organization. One decision called for the organization to operate as two distinct entities (a fraternity and a sorority) bound by a single constitution. At that time two executive boards were established - Founder Doral R. Pulley presided as the president of the fraternity, and Founder Joyce Mungo presided as the president of the sorority. Visionary Founder Shirley K. Russell remained the advisor to the brother/sister organization.In October of 1989, the organization inducted its first line consisting of one brother and six sisters. The second line for the sisters was held in the fall of 1990. The sisters increased their membership by five.In the Spring of 1991 the entire Alpha Nu Omega Family met and decided to become a non-hazing organization. They adopted an intake curriculum now known as the Orientation Process. This decision lead to the rapid addition of membership.Change has taken place in Alpha Nu Omega on several occasions, but the brothers and sisters of Alpha Nu Omega Inc. hold to God's promise of membership growth and leadership in ministry. This will come through spiritual growth, which is found by walking in the Spirit and pressing toward the mark of the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. (Phillipians 3:14)

The national board spearheads all national initiatives, policies and procedures. PattersonEagle Brother Clarence Patterson was inducted into Alpha Nu Omega, Inc. in the spring of 1994 at Morgan State University (Alpha Chapter). As National President, he oversees the implementation of the vision and growth of the organization. Clarence has held positions on the local, regional and national level. Before becoming National President, he served as National VP of Fraternity Affairs. VP of Fraternity Affairs - Derek LaBoo Eagle Brother Derek M. LaBoo was inducted into Alpha Nu Omega, Inc. in the fall of 2000 at the University of Maryland – College Park (Kappa Chapter). As National VP of Fraternity Affairs, he directs all affairs for ANQ Fraternity. Derek previously served as a regional director, an alumni chapter president, and as a local director of ministry. Derek and his wife, NVP of Sorority Affairs Shalyta, currently reside in Odenton, MD with their children Gabrielle and Derek, Jr.VP of Sorority Affairs - Shalyta LaBooDove Sister Shalyta LaBoo was inducted into Alpha Nu Omega in the fall of 1999 at Towson University (Beta Chapter). As National VP of Sorority Affairs, she directs all affairs for ANQ Sorority. Before joining the National Board, Shalyta held various chapter president positions and was also an advisor. Shalyta attributes much of her personal growth and leadership development to relationships and opportunities offered through ANQ and is driven by her desire to see others experience the same.Director of Ministries - Ryan M. Harrison Eagle Brother Ryan Harrison was inducted into Alpha Nu Omega in the fall of 2003 at Morgan State University (Alpha Chapter). As National Director of Ministries, he oversees ANQ’s spiritual development and ministry projects. Ryan was previously a chapter president, a local advisor, and a public relations manager for an alumni chapter. ANQ continues to be a proving ground for Ryan, developing his calling and passion for ministry to young adults.Treasurer - Toneka Ross Dove Sister Toneka (Nikki) Ross was inducted into Alpha Nu Omega in the spring of 2000, as a charter member of Kappa Chapter (University of Maryland-College Park). As National Treasurer, she oversees the organization’s finances and financial growth. Prior to joining the National Board, Nikki served as a senior and local advisor and alumni chapter treasurer. ANQ has played an instrumental role in Nikki’s spiritual, professional and personal development. VP of Training & Development - Rafael FrazierEagle Brother Rafael Frazier was inducted into Alpha Nu Omega in the fall of 2003 at Morgan State University (Alpha Chapter). As the National Vice President of Training & Development, he is responsible for creating resources that increase member effectiveness, both personally and for the organization. He previously held positions on the local level as a director of ministry and president. He also led the conception of Alpha Nu/Nu Alpha Junior Fraternity and Sorority. Rafael loves all that ANQ has to offer and the brotherhood exhibited in the organization.VP of Expansion - Olney May EdmondsonDove Sister Olney May Edmondson was inducted into Alpha Nu Omega in the fall of 2003 at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (Theta Chapter). As National Vice President of Expansion, Olney May focuses on identifying potential new chapters and developing them through the chartering process. Olney May was previously a regional director in the Texas Region, where she led the chartering of Tau Chapter. Recording Secretary - Courtney RutledgeDove Sister Courtney Rutledge was inducted into Alpha Nu Omega in the spring of 2003, as a charter member at Lambda Chapter (Howard University). As National Recording Secretary, Courtney maintains records, governing documents, and member certifications for the organization. She has held positions as a local advisor, treasurer, parliamentarian, and historian. Courtney’s hope is to see ANQ become a worldwide ministry that creates change and brings the gospel of Christ Jesus to many.Assistant Secretary - Michline BricePublic Relations Manager - Jessica M. Jackson Dove Sister Jessica Jackson was inducted into Alpha Nu Omega in the fall of 2001 at the University of Maryland-College Park (Kappa Chapter). As National PR Manager, Jessica develops external and internal communications for ANQ. Before joining the National Board, she held positions as chapter president and regional director. Jessica loves serving the Lord through Alpha Nu Omega, and her heart's desire is to see the organization change the lives of those it touches.Director of Event Planning - Monique Toussaint Dove Sister Monique Toussaint was inducted into Alpha Nu Omega in the fall of 2003 at American University (Iota Chapter). In her role as National Director of Event Planning, Monique manages the execution of national events and meetings throughout the year. She was previously a chapter president, local advisor and alumni treasurer.

Family Structure

ONE FAMILY, TWO DISTINCT ENTITIES

Alpha Nu Omega's family structure sets it apart from other fraternities/sororities. The fraternity and sorority share one name, one constitution, one national board, and the same colors (navy blue, gold and white). We are a family, and we often work together as one. Yet, Alpha Nu Omega is one organization with two distinct entities – a fraternity and a sorority. The fraternity and sorority hold separate orientation processes and manage different outreach initiatives.

Dove Sisters

The sorority mascot is the Dove, and sorority members are referred to as Dove Sisters and Virtuous Women of God.

Eagle Brothers

The fraternity mascot is the Eagle, and fraternity members are referred to as Eagle Brothers and Mighty Men of Valor.

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31)

Non-Hazing Policy

NON-HAZING POLICY

Alpha Nu Omega, Inc. is a non-hazing organization. The National Executive Board of Alpha Nu Omega, Inc. defines hazing as “any activity involved in orientation which causes, or is likely to cause, bodily danger, physical harm, or personal degradation or disgrace resulting in physical or mental harm to any member or prospective.”

In addition, hazing is “any activity or situation in which prospectives are expected to commit an unlawful act or violate the Code of Conduct.” Almost anything that prospectives are required to do that members are not has the potential of being classified as hazing.

National Initiative

NATIONAL CAUSE:

MENTAL HEALTH

In support of Alpha Nu Omega's purpose to "minister to the needs of the whole person", the organization's National Cause is Mental Health. While Mental Health covers many areas, for the years 2011 and 2012, ANQ is focused on the area of Depression. As rates of depression and suicide rise, ANQ will work as an advocate for Mental Health and connect people across the country to the resources they need to become whole.

Undergraduate Membership UNDERGRADUATE MEMBERSHIPFor undergraduates, membership requirements consist of the following:Enrollment in a college/university at which a chapter of Alpha Nu Omega, Inc. is established. A minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 with at least 12 credits.•Attend Alpha Nu Omega events prior to the Interest Meeting.Attempt to know the members of your potential chapter and of same gender.A recommendation letter from a member of the organization.Attend the scheduled Interest Meeting on time, dressed in professional attire. Membership applications are distributed at Interest Meetings. Contact the chapter in your region for specific dates.For information on chartering a chapter at your college/university, email National Vice President of Expansion, Olney May Edmondson at olney.edmondson_alphanuomega.org

Graduate Membership GRADUATE MEMBERSHIPFor college/university graduates, membership requirements consist of the following:Attend Alpha Nu Omega events prior to the Interest Meeting.Attempt to know the members of your potential chapter and of same gender.A recommendation letter from a member of the organization.Attend the scheduled Interest Meeting on time, dressed in professional attire.
